System proves critical

Slide Rail System plays a critical role on university project

Tank installation using Slide Rail in a "Quiet Zone"

Background

The University of Michigan Hospital at Ann Arbor required a 300,000-gallon diesel fuel tank for emergency power generators to be installed on-site.

Problem

The tank had to be installed 24’ deep, requiring an excavation 64’ long x 17’ wide, with an existing 30” diameter underground water pipeline, paved road and property lines close by.  With all this had to be done in a “Quiet Zone” where the vibration caused by installing tight sheeting was not acceptable to hospital personnel performing life saving micro-surgical procedures.

Solution

Fransted Construction of Concord, MI contacted Pro-Tec Equipment about the Slide Rail System.  With a CAT 365 excavator and a 3 cubic yard bucket work commenced.  2-1/2 days later, the entire clear span system was installed, including walers and tiebacks, allowing for the tank to be lowered into the system with ease.  After the tank was set, the post and panels were raised incrementally from the bottom up as backfilling and compaction took place, resulting in total system removal time of less than one day.

All things considered, the people for Fransted Construction felt that Pro-Tec’s Slide Rail System contributed considerable savings in both time and materials over tight sheeting.
